I Fed a Rhino!

The second part of our backstage tour of the Portland zoo was the rhinoceros. Even the keeper stays away from it, protected by huge bars. Feeding him was one of the most memorable things I have ever done. Its prehensile upper lip (adapted for grasping and holding), slimy, warm tongue and lower lip grabbed around my hand. What a feeling.

Everything was in order as we walked into Moe's many back areas.

His keeper and large scratching post.

Here I am checking the area out. Didn't need my raincoat, which is wrapped around my waist.

Scott is letting Max feel the strong bristles on Moe's scratching post.

Play area.

Shana checks out the space. So, where's the rhino? We moved further into the structure and found him.

See his horn and odd mouth poking through the bars as the keeper greets him.

Son, Scott feeds him first.

Shana next.

I give it a go. So cool!!

Robert feeds him one of the food bar that was originally made for the monkeys.

Look hard and you can see more of the rhino behind the bars. The food bars, in the green bucket, fit right into the palm of your hand.

He wanted more food!

Say, "Ah".

Farewell, Farewell, you old rhinocerous
I’ll stare at something less prepocerous.
